Long ago, this city was a metropolis of Roman Gaul. Today, Arles is both the gateway to the Camargue, and the home of festivals and bullfights that still take place in the very arena where the Romans held their Games in the 1st century A.D. This town steeped in history, culture and festivities has always attracted artists, including Van Gogh, who stayed here with his friend Gauguin. Picasso, a lover of bullfighting also produced 2 paintings and 57 sketches here.
