The period of the Avignon Papacy had a major impact upon the architecture of this city. Highlights include the Palais des Papes, built in the 14th century, the large bustling square next to it, the famous Pont d’Avignon, the Petit Palais museums and the Palais du Roure. From the top of the walls, it is not difficult to see why the city of the Popes was a renowned fortified palace.
